Tall, ginger, and patient is what some students might use to describe the first-time teacher here at Triton, Mathew Guerin. You might’ve seen him a few times in the halls but most likely not since his new classroom is isolated from most classrooms. Guerin has had a pretty good job adjusting here but of course, there are a few minor bumps along the way.

“As a new teacher, growing pains, new job, lesson planning, teacher stuff, figuring how to explain things to students since I’ve been working with engineers and keeping it at your base,” said Guerin. These are issues Guerin has been working through so far this year, he says.

Mr. Guerin gave us insight into what it’s like to be a new teacher and his experience here at Triton so far.

Guerin said he has always known he wanted to do something with engineering. His family is a family of engineers, including his mom, dad, and sister. He earned his bachelor’s degree at Northeastern University where he was in a program that would allow him to do six months of work and six months of school. The program allowed him to get actual work experience and allowed him to figure out what he might want to do after graduation.

When he graduated he got a job designing medical devices. He went on to work at Teradyne in North Reading as a semiconductor engineer. Teradyne develops and sells automatic test systems.

After all that he decided he needed a career switch for financial and other reasons and went job searching for a teaching job on a website called School Spring which is how he ended up here at Triton. This year is Guerin’s first year as a teacher. Being a first-time teacher in a new school can be hard to adjust to but Guerin has liked it here so far.

“I’d say yeah, the students are respectful and really nice. I don’t know, really welcoming,” said Mr. Guerin when asked if he likes it here so far. Of course not everything is easy.

He also mentioned how he hopes that students enjoy coming to his class. Emily Quijada, a student in his B-period class gave her thoughts about his class and him.

“I feel comfortable in his class,” said Quijada when asked the question of what the atmosphere is like in his class. “He’s really nice. He’s very patient and he always helps us when we need help”

Adam Lothrop, a science teacher here at Triton, is Guerin’s mentor and has been helping him adjust.

“Both fun and exceptionally, almost easy,” Lothrop said about mentoring Guerin.

“He picks up really quick and is a great friend,” said Lothrop. Guerin and Lothrop get along quite well and have similar hobbies including liking spicy foods, and the outdoors, and they are both cat dads. They’ve hung out outside of school with other teachers, such as math teacher Mr. Matt Haley.

In the end, Guerin said he does hope for one thing.

“I hope that the students enjoy coming to my class,” he said.
