Triton Voice’s Review on the Latest Sports Drink, “PRIME”

Prime Time

From boxing rivals to business partners, social media stars and influencers KSI and Logan Paul have created a new sports drink to compete in the competitive market. The Triton Voice staff reviewed certain flavors which resulted in  mixed feelings about the drink.

Prime was founded and launched in 2022, and since then numbers have skyrocketed. The original 5 flavors – orange, grape, lemon lime, blue raspberry and tropical punch – hit the online stores, and sold out within minutes. Soon enough, new flavors came out – such as meta moon and ice pop – and hit the shelves of the retail market, always selling out. Since the beginning, Prime has come out with an energy drink, on top of 4 new flavors – one being KSI’s own unique flavor – limited to the UK only. They have even become the official sports drink for multiple companies, including the Los Angeles Dodgers, the UFC and the WWE.

Prime Hydration has a net worth of $150 million to $200 million. Prime is so expensive due to the huge demand during its UK launch, it has been hard to get hold of the hydration drink, and this has pushed up prices. Prices for the drink range depending on the region you are buying it from and what store. It can go anywhere from $2 all the way up to $20. On Twitter last year, KSI added that the beverage was being sold on the “black market”. Paul claims that Prime has sold 100 million bottles and earned $250 million in retail sales in its first year. Data from BevNet shows that Paul and KSI’s beverage brand did $37.6 million in retail over a 52-week span that ended on August 7, 2022.

Triton Voice staff during F period reviewed seven drinks from the Prime line – four hydration drinks and three energy drinks. The hydration flavors were Blue Raspberry, Tropical Punch, Strawberry Watermelon and Meta Moon while the energy drink flavors were Blue Raspberry, Tropical Punch and Strawberry Watermelon

The Staff started off first with the Blue Raspberry Prime energy drink. The drink for overall taste and sweetness was around 3 out of 5. The staff seemed to enjoy this drink, although they felt it wasn’t the best. The look of the can struck the attention of the staff, getting an overall 4 out of 5. Mr. James Allen, journalism teacher, described it to have a “cotton candy” taste. Next up was the Blue Raspberry Hydration drink, which surprised the Voice. After drinking the energy drink version, the Voice seemed to be let down with the hydration flavor. The overall score for sweetness and general taste went down from a 3 to 2.5 and 1.5. The look of the bottle is still attractive to the staff though, receiving a 3.5 out of 5. The voice was satisfied with the ingredient contents in both drinks, with the majority voting yes over no. “(It’s like) chunky water,” said junior Voice member Gia Sico.

Next up on the list was Strawberry Watermelon energy drink. This seemed like the best one for the voice, receiving 4 out of 5 for general taste and sweetness of the drink. This version of the can looked more attractive, receiving a 4.5 out of 5. “Holy moly this is super duper good,” said senior Voice member Nick Doucot. Next up was the hydration version of Strawberry Watermelon, which lived up to the energy drink versions hype. The Voice still enjoyed this one a lot, getting a 3 out of 5 average for sweetness and general taste. The bottle was more attractive than the Blue Raspberry bottle this time around, receiving a 4 out of 5. Some enjoyed the ingredients contained in these drinks, especially the energy drink version. The hydration version not so much, receiving a 50/50 yes and no from the staff. There were mixed reactions about this one, some voting lower than others, but generally the voice loved the Strawberry Watermelon flavor profile.

Tropical Punch was next in line for the taste testing, starting off yet again with the energy drink version. This was easily the best one, well liked by the staff, receiving nothing but positive feedback. The general taste scored a 4.5 out of 5, super close to being 5 out of 5. The attractiveness of the can still was a positive, receiving a 3.5 out of 5. “I like the taste of this one, (I) would buy,” said junior Voice member Molly Porter-Crean. The hydration version however shocked the staff. There were mixed reviews on it, but the overall rating was average. It received a 3 across the scale, from sweetness to general taste and even the attractiveness of the bottle. However, some voice members disliked the flavor, saying it reminded them of “cough syrup” or even a “medicine taste”. The staff seemed pretty positive about this flavor profile, agreeing that both versions contain good ingredients.

The final prime to try was Meta Moon hydration – it surely shocked the staff. Everything from the general taste to the sweetness was ranked the lowest out of all the flavors, with negative reactions across the board. The sweetness received an 1 out of 5 with the general taste receiving a 1.5 out of 5, on average. This was easily the worst flavor the staff ranked, saying that the flavor tasted “bad” or “nasty”. “Sucks, it sucks, it sucks, you suck,” says Doucot. Reactions were similar to Doucot’s.  “Bad, nasty, waste of money” said Sico. “This is nasty, (you) couldn’t pay me enough money to drink this,” said Porter-Crean. “AWFUL!!!” said senior Voice member Emma LeBlanc.

With some awesome flavors, and some not so good ones, Prime is heading up to the top of the sports drink market. With new flavors and more coming this year and years to come, it’s only a matter of time until shelves are filled with the new influencer sports drink. It’s Prime’s time to shine.
