Sophomore, Colin Roberge, and junior, Abby Sutherland said they see connections between Triton and popular Netflix television shows.
In an interview with the Triton Voice, sophomore Colin Roberge says that the series he feels is closest to Triton is one called “On My Block,” a series about four friends navigating high school. “On My Block, because like there’s a lot of drug use, our sports suck, people do bad things. Also “All American” because there’s a lot of partying and football.”
Junior Abby Sutherland said she sees connections between Triton and the show “All American,” a show about a high school football star from South Los Angeles who is recruited to play in Beverly Hills and faces living in both worlds. “Gotta go with “All American” because the drama is portrayed the same,” said Sutherland.
According to IMD movies, ‘All American’ is a show based on teenage life that revolves around high school, hardship, and football. The show is based in California and due to the main character Spencer, two worlds collide; the richest city in the area meets a town living in poverty.
High school is a cannon event in every single student’s life. Whether it be for the better, the worse, or the worst possible thing in life, everyone has to go through it. When the movie ‘High school Musical’ came out, there was hefty backlash strictly because that isn’t what high school is like at all. From a user review on IMD movies, they stated “One thing that has always irritated me as a high school student is Disney’s portrayal, in its various programming, of what high school is like. For the most part, Disney gets it TERRIBLY WRONG, and this is immensely evident in “High School Musical”. So, what movie/show does justice by showing what high school, specifically Triton, is really like then?
When seeking to find out what television production describes our school, I went out in search of some of our own students’ opinions. As expected, their thoughts were all over the place.
“Definitely not ‘All American’ because their football team was actually good.” Junior Jayleen Lorenzo states, “It would probably be ‘Freaks and Geeks’ because half our school is freaks while the other half is geeks.”
“What’s the clickiest movie ever? It’s nicer than ‘Mean Girls’ but it’s just as clicky.” Junior Lily Foster replied.
From a teacher standpoint, Mr. Maxwell Girouard said, “Fast Times at Ridgemont High’ because they are the prototypical high school. Drama, relationships, drugs and alcohol, all the typical stuff you would find at Triton.
Overall, it’s clear no single movie or show seamlessly represents what high school is actually like. Everyone from students to teachers have their own idea of what feels fitting, and those range from football dramas to awkward geeky teens. What this shows is that high school isn’t one big universal experience; it’s a mix of emotions, hormones and personalities that simply can’t be summed up in any script (or else it would be rated worse than R). Though Hollywood makes high school seem like a dream, the real story is written everyday in the halls of our own school.
