What is happening?
The Gaza genocide has been happening since October of 2023. What started as a war, has turned into a full blown genocide. Millions of lives have been lost due to the cruelty dealt by Israeli soldiers. From Palestinian soldiers, to women and children.
How is it affecting us?
Protesters all over America are trying to help Gaza after these devastating events. Many citizens of Gaza are left with no family, and no home. The events that have occurred are so horrendous that even Israeli organizations are declaring that what has happened to Gaza is, in fact, a genocide. “A number of leading rights organisations, including two Israeli organisations, have also declared they believe Israel is committing genocide,” writes Emir Nader, for the BBC.
What effects has it left on Gaza?
The Gaza genocide has had a huge impact, leaving the city in ruins.
“An estimated 80% of Gaza’s structures have been damaged or destroyed,” writes Freddie Clayton and Max Butterworth with NBC News.
How is this relevant to Triton?
Here at Triton, we have the Crimes Against Humanity class taught by
Mr. Chad Richard. Richard has been teaching this class for four years. “I feel like it’s my most important,” said Richard when asked if it is his favorite class. This is a class that covers multiple subjects, such as the Armenian genocide, the Holocaust, and the genocide in Rwanda. In March the class will cover Gaza.
How will this class have an impact?
“It allows me to look at those issues as a class,” said Richard. “Questions like ‘are human rights being abused?’ and ‘is it a genocide’…” The Crimes Against Humanity class focuses on world events, while also looks into events happening all around us. “Yeah I worry the US is not standing up to hate as much as it used to,” said Richard. “It’s a scary trend.”
What now?
Many people around the world are wondering what is next. Images of cities in ruins, bodies scattered. The scene in Gaza is that of a nightmare, leaving Palestinians all over the world wondering, “When will it end?”
