Billie Eilish’s first studio album “When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?” is possibly the most unique pop album of the decade.

The album is packed with tear-inducing emotion and up-beat songs that you can groove to. When listened to through stereo headphones, the sound is so clear it almost sounds like you’re in the recording studio with her. The bass is mind shaking and pierces through the minimalist instrumental parts but also leaving room for her iconic voice.

The album starts out with her song that was number one on “Billboard Hot 100” for a whole week, “bad guy” . The song is a captivating start to the album that presents her cynical lyrics in a rather calm and creepy tone. She delivers the message of the song through iconic and catchy lines like, “I’m that bad type, make your mama sad type,” or “You said she’s scared of me? I mean, I don’t see what she sees, But maybe it’s ‘cause I’m wearing you’re cologne.”

The album then shifts moods to the song “xanny” that references drug abuse of the prescription anxiety medicine Xanax. The track features a wavy effect that is added to Eilish’s voice that makes it sound as if she is singing through a fan (in a good way.) This sound has now become a recognizable trademark of hers.

The next two songs on the album, “you should see me in a crown” and “all the good girls go to hell” pass the mood back over to cynical as suggested from the titles. Not only the lyrics, but the instrumentals are far more aggressive than most of the other songs on the album, (only being beaten by “bury a friend.” This is achieved by a higher tempo and heavier drum tracks.

Number ten on the album is Eilish’s 4th most played song on Spotify,

It also owns the line that inspires the album’s title, “when we all fall asleep, where do we go?”

The last two songs of the album (not including the wrap-up outro that is “goodbye”) send out a final somber message ending Eilish’s first album. These heavy songs are “listen before i go” and “i love you.” Both are very sad songs but I think “listen before i go” is the one that conveys the most emotion of the whole album. It is the story of her last message to her lover before commiting suicide. The song starts with the words, “Take me to the rooftop, I wanna see the world when I stop breathing, turning blue.” These songs as a pair leave me feeling like crying everytime I listen, and are a wonderful conclusion to the album.

As a child Billie Eilish was homeschooled, and began singing and writing her own songs when she was eleven. She takes after her brother Finneas O’Connel who was the producer for her studio album. Almost all of the album was recorded in Finneas’ bedroom at the family home, because he said that he loved the way the vocals sounded in the room, according to an article by the ProSound News. Not to mention Billie was only seventeen years old when the album was released. This is an impressively young age to release a chart topping album and win multiple MTV, American Choice, and Teen Choice awards.

Billie Eilish’s first studio album has blown me away every time I listened to it, and I still scramble to find my headphones everytime she releases a new single. I truly hope she produces a new album soon.

Number ten on the album is Eilish’s 4th most played song on Spotify, “bury a friend.” The creepy tune features perfectly placed sound effects like screaming, stepping on glass, and stapling. It also owns the line that inspires the album’s title, “when we all fall asleep, where do we go?”
