It seems other movie genres get overlooked during the countdown to Christmas Day. One of the best ways to get excited about the holidays is to play classic Christmas movies on repeat. Some of these classic Christmas movies include Home Alone, Elf, National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, and A Charlie Brown Christmas.

Home Alone is about a young boy who is accidentally left at home, alone, while the rest of his family goes on vacation. The boy, Kevin McCallister, must protect his home from two intruders by setting unusual traps around the house.

Elf is about a normal boy who accidentally travels to the North Pole and grows up being raised by elves in the North Pole. Now as an adult, Buddy the elf, travels back to New York in search of his real father. Since Buddy was raised in the North Pole the movie includes over-the-top decorations and celebrations, Buddy brought with him to New York.

National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation is about a father who wants to have the perfect Christmas with his family, yet, somehow everything went wrong from uninvited guests to decorations.

A Charlie Brown Christmas is about Charlie Brown, who is on a mission to get a Christmas tree for the Christmas pageant. All of his friends want him to get the biggest and best Christmas tree but what he returns with lets them down. The message in this movie is very meaningful because Christmas should not be all about the presents, it’s about spending time with family, celebrating religion, and celebrating a new year.

“White Christmas is my favorite Christmas movie because even though it is old, it is a yearly tradition that I watch it with my family but mostly with my grandmother,” said junior Jamie Bell.

Christmas movies can bring back old memories, happy thoughts, and enjoyable experiences as well.

“In college, on my parents first date, my dad made my mom hot chocolate, and they watched the Grinch in their dorm room. So now every year my dad and I watch the Grinch, and it’s a fun time,” said senior Bridget Sheehan.

“The best experience I had in Boston was with my mom, and we watched The Christmas Story on stage. It was the best show ever, and it was excellent,” said Kaia Cohen.

Christmas movies are a good way to get into the holiday spirit, and they are ways to make lasting memories with family and friends. The countdown to December 25th feels like forever. However, watching Christmas movies seems to never get old because of the joy they bring to the audience.

Caitlin’s Favorite Classic Christmas Movies

My favorite classic Christmas movie is Home Alone. It is an unusual choice, but the boy in the film reminds me of my younger brothers because just like Kevin, they are always causing some trouble. My second favorite Christmas movie is Elf because I like the movies that Will Ferrell stars in, it is funny, but it also gets me into the Christmas spirit, especially when Buddy decorates Gimbels for Christmas. Unfortunately, I am not as artistic as Buddy, but I enjoy doing crafts with my cousins on Christmas day.   

I think that Christmas movies are a great way to get into the holiday spirit. Also, they are a perfect time for families to gather during a stressful time of year and relax for an hour or two.
