Budget Causes Substitutes to be Cut

There’s a possibility of Triton no longer having substitute teachers

The outcome for the budget next year is still unknown; everyday students hear about new ways the administration is planning on saving money of the budget doesn’t pass.
One of those ways is a plan of cutting substitutes for next year. This means that if a teacher is out, the students will go to the library and an I.A will supervise the class.
“This happened at a district I used to work in,” said principal Tim Ruggere. “What we did was send all students to the cafeteria, but here we will be sending them to the library,” said Ruggere. “We will be making sure when this happens the library will still be open for students during their studies,” he said.
Since there will be the extra class(es) in the library because of an absent teacher, plus three classes using media labs/chromebooks, there’s a question in the air if the library will be open to students with a study period.
“Myself (Rugerre), Ms. Dawe, and Mr. Brennan have expressed that we don’t want the library to be closed,” said Rugerre. “We want students to be able to go into the library and relax, while still getting work done,” he said.
Some think that this could increase the amount of students who skip or leave school.
“I think that not having a substitute could cause some chaos,” said senior Josh Rolfe. “It’s already a problem when students skip class, so if there’s no one watching them and have nothing to do I would assume some would leave the class,” said Rolfe.
“It would be cool to have a study instead of having a substitute,” said sophomore Abbie Magee. “I don’t have my license yet so I can’t leave school but I do think some kids would leave,” she said.
“We expect students to leave or skip,” said Ruggere. “Whether they have a substitute or not kids will still do it. We just have to catch them, and bring them back to class, it’s just something we’ll have to deal with,” he said.

“I think if a teacher is out for one day, there shouldn’t be a problem, but a long-term sub is definitely necessary,” the substitute said.
