Q&A with Derek Maida

The Struggle Of Transferring Schools As a Junior In High School

Alessandra Basile and Meri Fullford, Staff Writers

Derek Maida is a student here at Triton Regional High School, who just recently re-joined us. The Triton Voice interviewed him to discover the struggles behind switching high schools junior year. He originally came to Triton in elementary, and high school, then transferred to Bishop Fenwick, and then again decided to come back to Triton.

Derek Maida grew up in Byfield, Massachusetts. He takes part in the hockey team here at Triton, playing on the varsity team during the winter. He has plans to continue onto college after high school to become a pilot someday. Here are some questions we asked about his experience:

Q: What was your childhood like?

A: My childhood was easy and carefree unlike it is now.

Q: Do you have any siblings?

A: I have a brother who’s 21, and a sister who is 18.

Q: Do you like it here at Triton?

A: Yes I do. It’s welcoming.

Q: Who would consider your friends here?

A: Anthony Particelli, Joe Doucot, and Peter Drew.

Q: Would you rather be at a different school?

A: I guess I would rather be here.

Q: Do you feel like you fit in here?

A: I definitely fit in with the Triton environment. The teachers are more helpful, I have closer friends here, and there is a strong community here. I feel like I connect with the kids more here.

Q: How was it leaving Triton and then coming back?

A: Leaving was very easy. I didn’t even care. But, coming back was very hard because I was worried about what I had missed. I didn’t know how the schedule was run, or where the classes were, or even if I would be able to have the same friends from before.

Q: Would you rather be at Bishop Fenwick?

A: No, I don’t regret leaving that school.

Q: Did you leave any close friends behind?

A: Oh yeah I definitely did.
