Winter does not just bring out cold weather and big thick jackets, it is a whole new season for sports and not just football on TV but high school sports, too.

This month a lot of winter sport teams are forming and it’s holding more fun during cold weather because it is indoors. Lots of students can sign up for sports including boys basketball, women’s basketball, winter track, and wrestling.

Mitchell Hopkinsin

Mitchell Hopkinsin, junior, plays junior varsity basketball during the winter season. They hold practices every day and hold games some Tuesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays.

“I enjoy hittin’ threes,” he states as his favorite part of the game.

Hopkinsin also plays other sports, “Basketball is the only sport I play in the winter, but in the spring, baseball is where it’s at,” he said.

There is always a very important player  on most teams, “Mason Ferrik is definitely the best on our team,” Mitchell stated because he scores a lot for the team.

Jeremy Duford

Jeremy Duford, junior, does wrestling during the winter season.

“Wrestling preseason starts the first Monday after Thanksgiving breaks and goes until March,” Duford said. Their practices are held often, just as basketball, “We meet every Monday through Friday for practice and we usually have meets on Wednesdays and quad meets on Saturdays,” he said.

Their coach is Coach Shawn McElligott, who takes them to, “individual tournaments and regional events where you can place a rank,” Duford said.

Students enjoy partaking in school sports; for activity, looking good for colleges, being involved with the school, or simply as a hobby. Winter sports are always important to keep everyone doing what they love all year round.
