Greek Orthodox Christmas

When people think of Christmas they generally imagine it as a holiday where people give and receive presents, and spend time around their family. But, many people forget the true meaning of Christmas; which is to give what we have to those in need and to respect the lives we are in. I was born into a Greek Orthodox family. The church I attend to is called St. Vasilios Greek Orthodox Church, in Peabody, MA. But we do not view church as a religious institution. We view it as a community of giving. Every Christmas eve we attend church at midnight to give thanks for what we have. Then, on Christmas morning we deliver presents to homeless shelters in Peabody, MA. After a long but rewarding day, me and my family cook a whole lamb.

¨The best way to cook a lamb is on a spit” says my uncle Yianni, ¨It must be the whole lamb with the best seasoning any man would die for.”

    My Greek Families Christmas        I look forward to every year, we listen to traditional Greek music that is native to Northern Greece which is were my family originates from. To end the night my aunt brings out my favorite dessert. The desert is called bougatsa. Bougatsa is a traditional Greek dessert that is made of cream and filo. Greek Christmas is a different way of celebration but I would never change a single thing of it.
