Winter is near and winter sport sign ups are approaching. At Triton High School the sign ups for winter sports include: Boys Ice Hockey, Swim and Dive, Boy and Girls Indoor Track and Field, Wrestling, and Boys and Girls Basketball.

When students and coaches were asked about sport they participate in or coach a few gave insight. Joe Colbert is the Boys and Girls indoor track coach, Kyle Mckendry is on the Ice Hockey team, Justin Flodman is a captain on the swim and dive team, and Haley Morgan is on the track team and competes in mid-distance running events. These are just a few of the of the students and one of the coaches that take place in coaching in the winter.

Boys/Girls Indoor Track and Field

The winter season is full of opportunity, new and old students will be joining track, and that means a different outcome. When asked how he thinks the track season will play out Colbert said he was “really excited about the season, should be competitive, young.” Morgan then, backed her coach up with the comment “I think pretty well over four years it’s improved pretty well and we have a good senior class.” There are many field events besides the few that Morgan does, like for example field events such as Shot Put.

Ice Hockey

This season for Ice Hockey should be a better outcome because there are many potential competitors for the Center position. Mckendry said “I think it’ll be an interesting (season), i think we will have a chance at co-postseason.” With Mckendry being a Captain he has much view on player and  the season arising. Mckendry spoke more on center saying “Center is kinda a competitive position because players try to always be there- they’re always moving basically everywhere.”

Swim and Dive

The swim and dive team have a promising view from two former swimmers who are returning, one is pushing to hopefully be a captain (Justin Flodman) and the other just a returning swimmer (Maria Shackleton). Flodman said of how “some freshmen are coming into the season; how the 50 yard freestyle and out of 4 of them competing only two of us (swimmers) can swim.” Shackleton also said for the most competitive position is “probably the freestyle and it was between Amanda Sheehan and Maggie Summet.” When asked even with a new season and new faces how would they predict the season play Shackleton and Flodman both were optimistic. Flodman said “ I think we will better than last year, even though we lost a lot of people.” Shackleton said “Probably good, we have a lot more seniors and juniors.”

Boys/Girls Basketball

With the basketball team having a new coach, the season should be interesting with more arising opportunities to be able for more wins or loses. Meredith Kennedy said “ I feel like it’s gonna be a good season.” With many seniors that left last year Kennedy spoke of how their will need positions to be filled. Kennedy said “Point Guard, Post players, and everyone learning to shot the ball. The defense is a strong but we have to work together as a team not an individual.” Optimism is a great way to start off a strong season.

Wrestling

This years wrestling team now consist of 3 girls and a team of boys. With the girls number rising there’s more diversity in the team making it a COED sport. With Shawn McElligott being the coach of the wrestling team also having background as a coach in other COED sports he was confident in the season even though there’s girls on the team.

When it comes to the competitive position it’s competitive every week of the season. McElligott said “ Their are 14 different weight classes and pretty much every week someone can challenge for that weight class.” Unlike other sports usually a specific poston is up for grabs in the beginning of the season and is then filled yet, in wrestling it can change weekly. The season playout is a little more complex when it comes to having new wrestler with veteran wrestlers. McElligott said “ (season) depends on how the new people gel with the veterans and if we fill all 14 white classes.”

The team has 3 girls on it and when McElligott was asked of how the girls would be treated  due to wrestling doesn’t have a separate girls team he gave a little insight on his view. McElligott said “We have had five to six girls before and i treated them just like athletes.” The view is a non bias view on stand point of sexist. The runners up this year though that McElligott spoke about are “Anthony Ostrander (10th grader), returning competitive- Division 3 North Section Champion. The other is Jared Durkin (12th grader), returning after prep school, has been a two time state qualifier.”
