Do students like having a class rank?

Newburyport High School has eliminated class ranks.

According to The Daily News, this decision was student initiated.

There was a petition signed by many students at Newburyport.

Students felt that it was too stressful to be ranked within their class. This elimination will start with the current Juniors, they won’t have a class rank to share with colleges.

Some students from Newburyport High School wish they never got rid of the class ranks.

“I wish they didn’t get rid of them i think it’s stupid that they did like it’s statistics people can’t get upset over facts” said Junior, Skylar Sneider of Newburyport.

“I don’t like not having them anymore because it is less motivating in school but it doesn’t necessarily affect my work ethic and I haven’t seen it affect anyone else’s either” said Junior Nicole Shoffner of Newburyport.

With Newburyport having no more class ranks, that brought me to ask if students here at Triton like class ranks.

“I think class rank is important because it gives students a reason to work hard and get recognized for their achievements. Without class rank some students won’t work as hard” said Marlee Smith.

Some students are really passionate about their class rank that they will do anything to pass the person in front of them. Class rank pushes students to be more passionate about their grades and working hard in all of their classes.

“At graduation the top 10% of the class and the salutatorian and valedictorian get recognized so it would be really weird at graduation if we didn’t have that” said Smith.

Some students don’t like class ranks because it is stressful and puts more pressure on students to rise to the top.

“I don’t like class ranks because it is really stressful to be compared to everyone in my grade” said Mackenzie Silverstein.

The pros and cons of having class rank here, is something that Triton may want to look into.
