No Class Rank: School Spirit Tanked

Why class rank should be kept at schools

Savannah Nolan, Staff Writer

Class rank has been a tradition at high schools for many years, including recognition of the valedictorian and salutatorian at Graduation.

However many schools, including Newburyport High, is breaking tradition and abolishing class ranks.

“People shouldn’t be labeled by a rank, it just seems unjust and wrong,” Said Junior Mackenna Faucher.

However in the 21st Century in society, there are a lot of good and bad traditions being broken, but class rank is one that shouldn’t.

In the 21st century every kid  seems to receive a trophy, for “participation” on the team. No one seems to ever be  recognized for their hard work nowadays. When people work hard for something, they deserve to be recognized. It seems as though everyone in the 21st century has their eyes shielded from the spotlight, and are wrapped in bubble wrap to protect themselves from disappointment or disapproval, hence the trophy child generation.

In this society a majority of people are the same and it seems as though no one is allowed to truly stand out anymore. People’s hard work should be allowed to be displayed and recognized.

According to some, class rank isn’t something that is measured by colleges in order of acceptance, therefore people should ignore it.

However students should be allowed to compete with each other, and push themselves to be the very best versions of themselves.

In addition to competition, students should take pride in their school, including taking pride in their classmates. Being Valedictorian of your class is a big accomplishment, and your classmates should be allowed to honor you for your accomplishment, as apart of having school spirit.

Class rank is something that shouldn’t be the end all be all of high school, but the valedictorian should be remembered, by the class for their hard work, and still give their traditional speech at graduation.
