Hopes are high, according to players on the Triton Boys Hockey team, and there’s lots of confidence in the upcoming 2024-2025 team.
As the Triton Boys Hockey team gears up for this upcoming season, the Triton Voice gets some insider’s perspective from some of the players. We even get some thoughts from the fans point of view.
“I think it’s going to be great, we have a bunch of strong returners and a great goalie,” senior captain Josh Hersey said.
The hockey team here at Triton High School is one of
the better sports teams and one of the most popular to attend. They have been quite successful the past few years and seem to have the skill to continue that success. Both the fans and players agree on that point.
“There are a lot of returning varsity players and the team is mostly made up of seniors,” senior Beckham Zizza said. “I think the team will be great this year. I’ll be at most games.”
Having a lot of older players with lots of experience is key to making a solid team and that’s what the Triton hockey team’s got this year. That’s also a reason for much of their past success due to the class of ‘25 having so many experienced and skilled players.
According to the MIAA.net, “MIAA Boys Hockey Power Rankings,” in the 2023-2024 season Triton was ranked 7th in the final Division 3 rankings. The year prior to that, the team had made it all the way to the final four. So it really seems they have high standards to meet.
However, senior Lucas Tinkham thinks they can exceed those standards.
“We have a lot of speed and older kids, so if we play with physicality we could dominate,” Tinkham said.
Most know at this point that this team doesn’t typically struggle with physicality, (see previous article on the big team fight that got many players suspended), so that shouldn’t be a problem for them.
Now just like every sports team out there, they may have their strengths, but they also have their weaknesses that play a huge part in the determination of their success.
“I think weaknesses may be penalties, as we had a lot of those last year,” senior captain Luke Sullivan said. “We also may struggle with depth in the lineup.”
Minutes in the penalty box could be detrimental to this team. If key players spend most of their time in the box, that takes away from their ability to help the team on the ice and could really put a damper on the outcome of their games.
Another struggle that was mentioned by captain Josh Hersey was their lack of defensemen.
“We lost our best defender, Jack Lindholm, last year so we really need to focus on figuring that out and strengthening that area,” Hersey said.
Top scorers expected to be Luke Sullivan, Josh Hersey, and Mason Colby if he makes the return could score many goals a game, but if there’s no defense stopping them from being scored on, then there’s not much hope. As we all know, defense wins championships.
This upcoming season is going to be quite the exciting one so make sure you go and support the team and all our seniors in their last hoo-rah.
According to si.com, the Sports Illustrated website, “Triton Regional Vikings Boys Ice Hockey Schedule” their first scrimmage is home on December 7th and their first regular season game is at Lynnfield on December 14th.
