Traveling can be so fun but sometimes it can put people in huge debt. If you want to travel to different countries and explore more of the world but don’t have a ton of money, this article was made for you.

Saving money can be a hard task and many don’t have a ton of it left over for fun activities such as traveling. Finding cheaper places to travel that still include a good experience is something a majority of people look for.

“I don’t like spending money but I do like traveling so I am always looking for the best prices with the best places,” said Trinity Cole, a junior at Triton High School.

The Triton Voice decided to do deeper research on vacations with great activities that won’t break the bank. “Nomadic Matt” is an expert on cheap travel and in his blog “Ten Best Places to Travel on a Budget,” he names his top ten places to travel on a budget. I listed the five that caught my eye.

  • Fiji: Resorts are typically $1,000 or less a night, offering “pristine beaches, world-class diving, tasty seafood, and friendly locals.” The prices of the resorts aren’t cheap but because the flight there takes you to Fiji Airlines it is quite a bit cheaper than traveling to most other places. Fiji is a great spot for backpackers because there are “cheap guesthouses, transportation, and activities.
  • Central America: Places including El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Guatemala offer the cheapest hotels for only $15  a night and $3  meals. Countries such as Belize, Panama, and Costa Rica are typically on the more expensive side of Central America but they are also safer and offer more for your dollar. In Central America a little money goes a long way:  excursions such as backpacking or water activities are under $100.
  • Cambodia: All of South Asia is on the cheaper end of vacations but Cambodia, in particular, is very “affordable, beautiful, and the locals are incredibly hospitable.” A private air-conditioned room goes for $20, street food is only $2, and transportation across the country is $20. “If you are spending $50 a day you are living large,” it is one of the cheapest destinations in the world.
  • China: If you get out of the big cities in China on your vacation, it can actually be quite affordable. “Hotels cost less than $20 a day, food is $2-5 per meal, and local transportation in the cities cost less than $1.” China is a beautiful place with well-known artifacts and a great opportunity to see how other people in different countries live.
  • South Korea: South Korea is often one of the more undiscovered and underappreciated countries to travel to. “It’s prices rival that of Southeast Asia, it’s high tech, the food is mind blowingly delicious and eclectic, the countryside is jaw-droppingly beautiful, and the nightlife is out of this world. It is one of the most underrated travel destinations out there.” Every 1,100 won in Korea is worth $1 USD and most things such as food, hotel, and transportation only cost a few 1,000 wons so you are not breaking the bank with this unique trip.

If you aren’t someone who gets to travel a lot because of the prices you are not alone!

“When my family and I are looking for places to travel we try to look for the best deal, money and activity-wise,” said Riley Bell, a junior at Triton High School.

I think most people would agree with Bell and say their family does the same, I know mine does! Luckily, with this information from “Nomadic Matt,” you may be able to travel more for less.
