Major Weather Disasters In The World Today

Hurricane season is up and running this year. Why has the 2017 hurricane season been so bad? We so far  have had at least 13 hurricanes around the world. We have also had the an unlikely high number of category 5 hurricanes hit land, a total of 6.

According to the New York Times article, The 2017 Hurricane Season Really Is More Intense Than Normal by Maggie Astor, this hurricane season has been more active than usual. Only four other seasons since 1995 have experienced as many hurricanes  by September 18th. Just two more hurricanes by the end of 2017, will put us in the top 15 since 1851. Hurricane Irma and Maria have been two of the most deadliest hurricanes the US has seen in a long time.

According to Google answers, Hurricane Harvey had a death toll rise to at least 82 people.Irma, which targeted Florida, had a death toll up to 102. The highest winds by Irma reached 185 mph. Damage from the storm is worth 62.87 billion dollars.  In the Caribbean at least 25 people have died from Irma and many left without power or supplies.  The hurricane started August 30, 2017 and ended September 15, 2017. Many areas around that have also been affected by Irma was Cuba, Florida, Puerto Rico, Verde, and more. This hurricane was very powerful and has put many people in danger and without homes.

Earthquakes also a factor in the current weather disasters

Along with the hurricanes we have been experiencing we have also had a handful of earthquakes. According to The Atlantic’s article, Rescue Dogs At Work After Mexico’s Earthquakes by Alan Taylor, Mexico has already experienced two earthquakes, killing one person and destroying 3 hotels. Mexico is in a state of crisis, and many people have died from the destruction the earthquake caused. Rescue dogs have been searching for weeks for any survivors.  Local volunteers have been doing everything they can to take care of the dogs.

ABC news has reported in their article, The Latest: Death toll rises to 226 from Mexico earthquake by The Associated Press, that Mexico’s civil defense agency says the death toll has risen to 226 from Tuesday’s magnitude 7.1 earthquake that knocked down dozens of buildings in Mexico City and nearby states. A secondary school partly collapsed, but school director Adelina Anzures said the earthquake drill the school held in the morning came in handy just two hours later when the real quake struck. “I told them that it was not a game, that we should be prepared,” Anzures said of the drill. When the quake came, she said the children and teachers rapidly filed out. “It fell and everything inside was damaged,” she said. Nobody was hurt.
