Changes at Triton

Triton will begin having a later start time to keep their students healthy

After years of complaints toward schools about how early their start times are, the issue is finally resolved. Triton will be changing their school day to start at 9 a.m. and end at 4 p.m. The only affects of the time change is selected sports will be required to practice before school, others will continue to practice after. This is because all sports will not have enough time and space to practice after school. “In 2014, the American Academy of Pediatrics issued a policy statement calling on school districts to move start times to 8:30 a.m. or later for middle and high schools so that students can get at least 8 ½ hours of sleep a night.” (www.npr.org) 93 percent of high schools in the United States start before 8:30 a.m. Starting in the 2019-2020 school year, students will start coming to school at 9am. The reason for this change is studies show that teenagers do not get enough sleep each night because they have to wake up so early for schools. The effects of not getting enough sleep is weight gain, symptoms of depression, not being attentive, and performing poorly in school. Therefore to keep Triton’s students from gaining weight or being depressed, the school day will now start at a later time.
