At the start of this school year, Mrs. Kimberly VanTwyver replaced Mrs. Elizabeth Davis as head of the Triton Regional High School Library. Mrs. VanTwyver has come from a short career in education. “After college I was an English teacher for three years in New Jersey, then I got a job in New York as a software developer, but I wanted to get back to my roots.” said Mrs.VanTwyver.

“In high school you don’t need teachers not supporting you.” Mrs.VanTwyver majored in English because a teacher believed in her when no one else did. When asked what lead her to become a teacher, Mrs.VanTwyver said “ Well here’s an adult who thinks I am not able to do this, so maybe I am not able to do it; you can have a kid who’s terrible at school and then all of a sudden this kid gets a masters degree. What you need in school is a good support system and Mrs. VanTwyver’s door is always open.

At the start of the school year a new library policy was put in place. Mrs.VanTwyver was asked about this rule, she responded “at the start of the school year only the first five students can go to the library.” This will change when we hire more staff for the library. Mrs. VanTwyver also said “You can go directly to the library for a pass or ask your teacher to call down.” The reason for this was that last year, the library was mismanaged and students were not productive.

I asked a Junior at Triton High School named Allie Hawks what she thought about the new librarian and the new policy. “ The policy is a bit frustrating, but I can see why it was put in place; the new librarian seems really nice” said Allie Hawks

Mrs. VanTwyver wants to get things done this year and change for the better. “Last year it was crowded and there were people who really needed the resources that weren’t getting them” Mrs. VanTwyver’s main goal is to “support your learning.” Currently, Mrs.VanTwyver is hiring a former Triton student named Donald Dow. Mrs.VanTwyver is confident that she will be able to establish the changes that she wants in order to make the library a better learning environment.
