Morning Cup O’Tea?

Owen Heffernan, Staff Writer

Do you ever wake up on one of these cold winter mornings and crave something that’ll keep you warm inside all day while at the same time giving you a energy boost but aren’t a coffee fan?

Well, you have picked the right article to read because I have found some of the best flavors of tea perfect for those monday mornings that will get you up and ready for school.

Over the course of the last few days, I have been trying different kinds of morning tea to figure which one is best when it comes to preparing me for the school day. I tried three different flavors: green tea, chai black, and ginkgo clarity. All the flavors were from the same company, Yogi (which can be found at Market Basket). Most of the information about the teas can be found on the box or on the company website.

I rated the teas based on three categories; taste, strength of flavor, and lasting effect.

The green tea scored well in taste due to the lemongrass and spearmint, which impart a crisp, refreshing flavor for an invigorating tea that supports energy and well-being. However, in the other two categories, the green tea did not have a lasting effect with only one cup and wasn’t as strong.

The ginkgo clarity was very different from the green. This tea combines the ginkgo leaf, which I learned was used for centuries in traditional Chinese medicine, to aid healthy cerebral function; with ginkgo and rhodiola. It  is meant to support memory. However that was the only category it did well in. I felt very awake the rest of the day, but the tea itself wasn’t very flavorful or strong.

The chai black was fantastic. Black tea is meant to be strong and somewhat bitter, so it wasn’t a surprise, however it was also very flavorful. The chai black was blended with cinnamon, cardamom and ginger; spices traditionally used for their warming properties, which was obvious because that is how I felt the rest of the day. Flavorful, strong, and long lasting, the chai black from Yogi was by far the best morning tea.
