Lindsey Laudenslager, Staff Writer

Here are the top three live Christmas trees you should be getting for your holiday season! Some of these trees can be found at local farms and nurseries such as, Marini Farm Stand in Ipswich, MA, Wolf Hill Garden Center in Ipswich, MA,  and the Beverly Tree Farm in Salisbury, MA,

  1. Fraser Fir- This tree has a mild fragrance with strong straight limbs, great for hanging ornaments. These trees are very hardy with good needle retention and survive being cut and shipped from the Appalachian Mountains. They last the whole holiday season. The Fraser Fir is usually a dark blue-green color and grows in a conical shape, perfect for a traditional Christmas tree look! Some fun facts about the Fraser Fir are: it is commonly used in the White House for Christmas, and it is named after John Fraser who discovered the tree when exploring in the 1700’s.
  2. Douglas Fir- The Douglas Fir has the traditional Christmas tree scent! It is a pyramid shaped tree with dark green colored needles that have a sweet scent when they are crushed. The needles are short, long lasting, and sit on branches that spread and droop around the tree. Some fun facts about the Douglas Fir are: the sap of the Douglas Fir was also used to treat wounds during the Civil War, and they’re one of the most common Christmas trees and are shipped all the way to Asia and Hawaii for the holidays!
  3. Scotch Pine- The Scotch Pine is a perfect Christmas tree for the holidays. This tree does not even drop its needles when dry! This tree is a bright green color and has branches that are very stiff. This means they are great for heavy ornaments and many lights! This tree can be kept in a bucket of water prior to being put into your house and will still remain fresh for the season! Some fun facts about the Scotch Pine are: this tree was originally used in reforestation in the United States and originally came from Europe!
