Julia Cordeau: A Field Hockey Star

Marlee Smith, Staff Writer

Julia Cordeau is a senior at Triton Regional High School and she is an incredible field hockey player. She has played field hockey every fall for Triton for the last 5 years. Cordeau started to play field hockey when she was in elementary school for a clinic every weekend during the fall called River Rivals. Ever since she was a little girl, she has loved to play field hockey. In November 2015, Cordeau earned athlete of the month for Triton Regional High School. She excelled at the sport and was a phenomenal player.
This year, for the 2017 fall sport season, Cordeau was faced with a difficult decision. It was her senior year and she needed to focus on her college applications and school work. She plans on going to either the University of South Carolina, University of New Hampshire, or University of Massachusetts Amherst. Cordeau also suffers from Tibial Stress Syndrome, which resulted Cordeau losing 2 weeks of her season each year. Her disorder causes extreme pain in both of her shins, very similar to severe shin splints. Running and even walking causes great pain to her legs and makes field hockey very hard as the sports has lots of running involved. She was faced with the difficulty of being in extreme pain while playing field hockey and being overwhelmed with school or not playing field hockey. For multiple months, Cordeau told her teammates that her career was over. The field hockey team did their best to convince Cordeau to play.
” We needed Julia on the team.” says Bridget Sheehan, a good friend of Cordeau’s. “Without her, our team would not be as successful. She is a very important player on the field. We need her.”
“When Julia told me at the end of the season last year that she might stop playing because of her shin injury she’s been dealing with through the years, I was really upset,” says teammate Riane Vatcher. “Not only would I be losing a great friend on the field but an amazing teammate. She is a huge asset to this team and it showed this season with her success individually and what she did for this team. I’m so glad she changed her mind and decided to play, we couldn’t have done what we did this season without her.”
As her teammates begged her to play, Cordeau finally gave into the pressure and decided to play for her final season of field hockey. Her decision in playing field hockey was the best choice she could have made. Cordeau was a huge asset to the team scoring 29 goals in one season. The team had a successful winning record 15-3-3. With her help, Triton made it to the semifinals of the tournament losing 1-2 to Manchester Essex, which ended their season. Cordeau received a Cape Ann League first team all star award, a Cape Ann League player of the year award, and a Triton High School most valuable player award at the banquet. She also qualified for the MSFHCA best of 60 senior all star game at Nashoba Regional High School. Cordeau played in the best of 60 game on November 19th and she got one assist.
“My biggest regret would have been not playing field hockey for my senior year.” says Cordeau. “I am so glad I played considering my teammates and I worked so well together and we had a very successful year. I am so proud of my team and so glad I continued.”
