From Harvey Weinstein to Kevin Spacey, hundreds of past and current stars are coming out and accusing these leading men of everything from groping to rape.
Although it may seem so in this case, sexual assault is not some far away problem. It is happening everywhere, including here at Triton. One student who wishes to remain anonymous told the Triton Voice about their experience of being sexually assaulted. “I remember feeling so betrayed,” said the student, “I felt so stupid for ever trusting my assaulter.” The student went on to tell the paper that now is the time that people can finally be honest about their experiences and no longer need to hide.
In the past month Harvey Weinstein, owner of the Weinstein Company, a film studio located in New York, has been accused of sexually assaulting over a hundred women. Among the accusers are Hollywood elites such as Gwyneth Paltrow, Lupita Nyong’o, and Angelina Jolie. All claim Weinstein attempted to seduce them while working with them on movies. Another prominent star facing sexual abuse allegations is House Of Cards actor Kevin Spacey who came out as gay in an attempt to defer the attention of the media from the allegations against him.
The accusations against Weinstein span the past three decades beginning in 1990 when an employee of the Weinstein Company sued Weinstein for sexually assaulting her while on business trips to Dublin and London.
“It’s just crude and appalling,” says senior Abby Confalone regarding the sexual assault.
In the past few weeks many famous women have come out and accused Weinstein of assaulting them. At first many believed the women were making accusations to gain attention but police investigating these claims have said they have enough evidence to try Weinstein on at least two counts of rape. Since his accusers have gone public, Weinstein has been fired from his company which is made possible because he only actually owns 42 percent of the company.
Shortly after the allegations against Weinstein came out, Anthony Rapp, who acted in the Star Trek movies came out saying that he was fondled by actor Kevin Spacey. Spacey quickly released an apology statement where he claimed having no memory of the encounter. In the same statement Spacey also came out as gay in what many say was an attempt to distract people from the accusations.
“He’s making the false statement that homosexuality and pedophilia go hand-in-hand and that’s just flat out wrong,” says senior Amanda Sheehan. Thirteen other men have since accused Spacey of sexually assaulting them, and as a result, he has been dropped by Netflix where he was leading the popular show House Of Cards.
