Fly into Bird Club!
November 14, 2017
If you appreciate wildlife and are searching for a step towards nature, bird watching is a suitable activity for you. But why bird watch alone when you can join Triton High Schools new Birding Club!
Thomas Horsley, the environmental science teacher at Triton Regional High School, is a former graduate and Marine Biology teacher of Gordon College. Interested in all species of animals for as long as he can remember, Horsley carried that passion into organizing a birding club. The Triton Voice wanted to learn more about birding and Horsley was happy to give a description.
“Bird watching is a hobby that is fiercely popular all over the world. It is the identification of birds and going on trips to study various bird species. Anyone who birds typically keeps a list of all the species they have seen. They refer to it as their ‘life list’. And so, once people get started, it gets a little addicting, I’ve always been passionate about it and I thinks it’s a lot of fun so that’s something I wanted to bring to Triton as an extracurricular activity,” shared Horsley.
The main goal Horsley is striving to reach by beginning this club is “to expand upon what we learn in environmental science,” and, “gain a sixth sense of observing with not only birds, but with nature in general because it basically changes the way you walk around and view the world.”
The Birding Club is how students will have the opportunity to study, discover, and learn about various species of birds. Students seem to be enthusiastic about the new club and are ready to join. Senior Gianna Maiuri shared her opinion on the Birding Club with The Triton Voice.
“I think the Birding Club is great! It’s cool that Mr. Horsley wants students to learn more about birds in our community.” Dylan Leavitt, a senior as well, also had positive things to say about the club.
“The Birding Club sounds awesome. I’m thinking about joining in the springtime. Hopefully the club will still be going on.”
A direct source from the Birding Club, senior Apphia Donoghue, shared her passion for the club with The Triton Voice.
“There is so much out there in the world that many people don’t even know exist! I’m excited to learn about new birds and have an opportunity to learn more about my surroundings and I strongly encourage others to do the same! So far it’s a lot of fun and we are about to start planning some field trips where we can look at these species first hand! Everyone should join!”
