Newburyport Change in Start Time

Starting school later in the morning is up in the air for Newburyport schools

The Newburyport District has begun discussion about changing the time school starts due to parents request for a more effective learning.

“Science suggests that the best time for our natural peak productivity is late morning,” said medicaldaily.com.

Starting school too early is an ineffective way for students to learn because most students brains don’t start running until the late morning. The Newburyport School district has started consultation about switching the start time to later in the morning. They have made it public that they are close to making this decision.

Starting school later in the day will give students the time to get their brain functioning without overworking it too early. The dailymail.com states that German schools that have switched to a later start time have experienced improvement in the success of exams and reduced rates of depression. Students have shown great progress in working later in the morning on the other side of the world; so should we consider making this change?

If there is a change, according to the Daily News of Newburyport, school days will start and end thirty minutes later. This may not seem like much of a difference but a little can go a long way. Starting school later in the day will please many students knowing they can get more sleep, with the penalty of staying later.

“It seems like a great idea. If Triton could do this, I know a lot of people would be pleased,” said junior Maggie Tardiff.

This change will be very beneficial to students which is a big factor to consider. Why start a school day early if no one is ready to learn. If Newburyport sticks with their decisions, is this something the Triton District should look into?
