Mrs. McKayla Shaw is new to the fourth grade team this school year at Newbury Elementary School following her recent move to Rowley.
Shaw is delighted that she chose to continue her teaching career at Newbury Elementary.
“I picked Newbury because of that small hometown feel,” said Shaw.
Shaw and some of her colleagues were recently interviewed by two reporters from the Triton Voice. Shaw discussed her lead up to becoming a teacher, her reasons for seeking a teaching position in Rowley, and her inspiration to teach upper elementary.
Shaw grew up in Gloucester and spent her college years studying elementary education at Salem State University. Shaw was eventually placed in the fourth and fifth grades at an elementary school in Danvers where she served as a student teacher. Once Shaw got her teaching license, she taught fourth grade in Gloucester for eight years until this year when decided to take the position at Newbury Elementary School.
After Shaw’s recent move to Rowley, her daughter started kindergarten at Pine Grove Elementary School. Shaw thought that being in the same school district would make her feel more connected.
When Shaw was asked why she picked fourth grade to teach, she stated that she was inspired by her own fourth grade teacher. After this special experience, she dreamed of being a teacher just like her one day.
Shaw’s teacher mentor, Mrs. McParland and her students are both happy and excited to have Shaw teaching there.
“Mrs. Shaw’s classroom is one where the children feel safe and supported. Her classroom is fun and engaging, and the children actively participate without fear of judgement. We are so happy to have Mrs. Shaw on our fourth grade team!” said McParland.
“I was excited to be in my teacher’s first class at NES,” reported one of Shaw’s new students.
Shaw’s start to her teaching journey at Newbury Elementary School so far has been very positive.
