Sitting around tirelessly on a quiet summer day may be the perfect opportunity to go out to experience a reimagined classic, long-awaited sequel or new, groundbreaking concepts on the big screen.
With summer vacation around the corner, many teens are wondering how to spend their time. This may mean a trip to the cinema to see the latest film, but what is there to see?
“I’m most excited to see The Phoenician Scheme this summer,” said Junior Joe Grimaldi. “It’s directed by Wes Anderson, and I really mess with his style.”
Summer is a time to go out with your friends, and for anybody who enjoys movies here are the films to look out for on the big screen this summer. The following are some of the most anticipated films set to release over the summer and why you should go see them.
Happy Gilmore 2:
The sequel to Happy Gilmore, Happy Gilmore 2, is set to release on Netflix on July 25 this summer. the 30 year old films iconic characters like Adam Sandler’s Happy Gilmore and Christopher Mcdonald’s Shooter McGavin. Both are starring in the new film which follows Happy Gilmore 22 years after he wins the Tour Championship against Shooter McGavin. This time Happy Gilmore, with the help of his old enemy, sets out to defeat Sappy Jonas on the Pro Golf Tour. The film is a must watch for anyone who’s seen the original as it will surely have a nostalgic feel with its returning cast members. It will be interesting to see how the film balances that nostalgia while also introducing a new plot.
28 Years Later:
The long awaited new installment to the 28 Days Later film series, 28 Years Later, is set to release on June 20th. The film takes place in the same terrifying zombie universe that was first introduced to audiences in 2002 with the release of the film 28 Days Later directed by Danny Boyle. Boyle continued the series in 2007 with the sequel 28 weeks later. Now, after 18 years, we are finally getting the third film in the series, 28 Years Later. The film picks up 28 years after the zombie virus outbreak and follows a group of survivors and their life on an isolated island. Boyle showcases how these characters have adapted to life as it is. The film stars Jack O’Connell, Ralph Fiennes and Aaron Taylor-Johnson. The film should be seen by any fan of the first film, 28 Days Later, as the new film is supposed to feature references to the series. This includes a cameo by star of the original film, Cilian Murphy, as we were able to see in one of the early trailers.
Ballerina:
The fifth film in the John Wick franchise, brought to us by director Len Wiseman, is an intense and action packed revenge story. Ballerina is set to release on June 6th 2025. The film stars actress Ana de Armas as Eve Macarro, a ballerina-assassin who seeks revenge for her fathers murder. The timeline of the film is said to take place in between the events of John Wick: Chapter 3 and John Wick: Chapter 4. Keanu Reeves is reprising his role as John Wick for the new film. The new cutting edge technology will deliver surreal and intense visuals as well as ground shattering sound design and will not leave audiences disappointed. The film is going to have to deal without having Keanu Reeves’ John Wick as the main character. Some people think that Balerina will struggle without the character while others don’t. It will be interesting to hear what critics and audiences have to say when the movie is released.
The Fantastic Four: First Steps:
Marvel’s latest movie, The Fantastic Four: First Steps, will be the second reboot of the Fantastic Four film series. The film, set to release July 25 to theaters, stars Pedro Pascal as Mr. Fantastic, Vanessa Kirby as Invisible Woman, Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm, and Ebon Moss-Bacharach as Thing. The style of the film is something almost unusual for Marvel as the style is a 1960s-inspired, retro-futuristic world with a vibrant backdrop. The plot follows the group of heroes as they try to balance their strength of family bond with the danger that comes with being a hero. The conflict arises as ravenous space god villain Galactus plots to devour earth in its entirety. The film is a must see for any Marvel or Fantastic Four fan because of the steps director Matt Shakman is taking with the project artistically. The film is supposed to be very comic book accurate as well compared to previous adaptations which has fans hopeful and excited for a different approach to the Fantastic Four.
The Phoenician Scheme:
Wes Anderson’s newest film The Pheonician Scheme will be released to some theaters this May 30th and all theaters on June 29th. The movie features a stacked cast with actors and actresses like Bill Murray, Tom Hanks, Benicio del Toro, Scarlett Johansso, Willem Dafoe, Benedict Cumberbatch, Bryan Cranston, and Michael Cera. The movie follows the Korda family business. Zsa-zsa Korda, played by Benicio del Toro, is the wealthiest man in Europe. He designates his only daughter, a nun, as the sole heir to his estate. The film is about how the family and their business overcome its enemies and competition. Anyone who has enjoyed Wes Anderson’s previous films should be sure to see this when it comes out. Wes Anderson’s style of filmmaking is a pleasure to watch for all audiences due to the bright color coded and symmetrical shots, The Phoenician Scheme should be no different and is one of the most anticipated movies of the year.
