For years, society has joked about a dystopian future in which robots and technology take over the world. That fate may not be much of a joke after all. While the whole world is frightened of the long-term effects of Artificial Intelligence, the risks and consequences are already apparent in high schools nation-wide. Since 2022, Chat GPT, an online AI resource, has been helping students breeze through their work. This new tool is causing an over-reliance on technology, academic misconduct, and a decrease in critical thinking skills.
Students rely heavily on Artificial Intelligence sites to complete their school work. AI is a very new concept that has yet to be perfected. Lazy students don’t think to fact-check or review AI’s outputs. The lack of correcting AI’s content not only diminishes the student’s grade, but also AI’s abilities. According to a 2024 article, “Over Reliance on AI: Addressing Automation Bias Today” by LumeNova, Chat GPT is designed to be utilized in a way that benefits societal operations. It is not meant to complete High School work. The more it does so, the weaker it gets, due to that lack of correction. Therefore, sabotaging the areas in which AI is necessary and helpful.
Kids these days have the answers for just about anything at their fingertips but now that AI has started to take over, kids are starting to take advantage of that. The more confidence one has in what AI has to offer the less they are using their critical thinking skills. They will rely on AI to retrieve information and problem solve, decreasing their engagement and critical thinking. When an individual has higher self-confidence the more they are using critical thinking skills and they are less reliant on AI to do the work for them.
AI can be a very useful tool, it was originally created to mimic human intelligence. AI has the ability to process large amounts of information, improve accuracy and personalize experiences across all fields. AI can be a great tool for students to use as a way to learn and help them in school. Technology has gotten so advanced that AI can do just about anything you want it to so it can be great resource.

Not only are students and kids affected but a lot of jobs are slowly being taken over by AI and with that people will lose their jobs.
