Triton has been cracking down on attendance and tardies by handing out detentions left and right.
Triton added a policy stating if students have three tardies in a month they will receive an after school detention. If a student who drives themselves to school has six tardies in a month they will lose their privilege to drive to school for a period of time. ¨The number of tardies is going down. Going from 3 pages to one and a half tardies¨ ¨Kids would rather just come in on time than have a detention so it is definitely working. ¨Stated by attendance coordinator, Julie Scarfo.
At Triton Regional High School a new policy was put in place giving people detentions if they were tardy a certain amount of times. This is to help try and combat the excessive amount of daily tardies at triton. This school year one of the biggest problems is tradieness. So in order to combat that the school has started issuing after school detentions for repeat offenders. At three tardies in a month you get a detention, and at six the students who drive themselves to school receive another detention and lose parking privileges for a period of time.
Most students have dealt with the punishment and decide to clean up there act. “I was frequently late at the beginning of the school year until I started getting detentions and decided to try harder to make it in on time.” said student Kyle Hoggard. While some others still refuse and are receiving punishments over and over. “I have a long commute to school so it’s hard for me to get here on time and most days I don’t really want to, so I keep getting detentions for it but I’ve been trying a little harder.” stated by student Raymond Cascio. For the upper class men with outstanding detentions that have yet to be served they may not be able to attend events such as prom or senior week activities. Some students have found ways around dealing with the punishments by lying their way out of a tardy marked down.
Overall the student body has listened since this policy was put into place as the tardy sheet went from up to 3 pages during the first half of the year, it has shrunk down to half that on the average day.
