With three scrimmages complete, Triton baseball is ready to go for an exciting season.
“We have an experienced group and should come out hot regardless,” says head coach Kyle Priest.
Triton played well despite having less time together than all three teams they played. Due to the rain the team hasn’t been able to get a lot of time outside.
“The team played well in the scrimmages, everyone is healthy which is the biggest positive,” says Priest.
The first baseball game is coming up soon. On (4/4) Triton will face North Reading away.
With the preseason just ending people are wondering if the team will be good this year. The team’s preseason record was 1-2 with both losses being very close games.
In the scrimmages, Triton played Groton-Dunstable Regional High School, Governor’s Academy, and Brooks. Against Groton, the team won ten to six. Against Governors the game stayed close until the last inning with Triton losing eight to nine. Lastly, they played Brooks which ended in a four to three loss.
“I think our toughest matchup of the season so far was Brooks because of the competitiveness and the way we battled in a tight game, especially against a good team,” says captain Connor Rumph “Their pitching and defense was definitely hard to beat.”
Triton has a lot of talent this year. For instance, Nick Bonasera pitched for three innings against Brooks only giving up two hits and throwing 38 pitches. Junior Genaro Carrillo had an amazing game as well with two hits and no errors on the day.
“Triton will perform well against difficult opponents as we have a lot of experience playing together as a team and we’re all here to do whatever it takes to win.” said captain Nick Bonasera.
The team is playing well. Nobody seems to be playing their own game, everyone is working together because they know that’s how they’ll win tough games.
“I think we have some very good chemistry this year with a bunch of returning seniors who have been playing together for a long time,” said Rumph.
This is definitely true, the team is dominated by seniors which could be a great thing. They’ve been playing with each other or against each other for years so that chemistry has got to be high.
Most of the seniors this year were also on varsity last year. Everyone on the team is friends and before one of the recent Saturday practices they met at a restaurant to get breakfast. The captains have agreed that before most of the Saturday games this year they’ll want to meet up in the morning for breakfast again.
