Junior Adeline Stapleton has been roped into the stress that is March Madness, constantly checking her brackets and keeping up with the updates about games. This is a big time of year.
“I kind of keep up with the women’s (tournament), only because of UConn, which is where I want to go to school,” Stapleton said. “I did a bracket for the men’s March Madness, not the women’s.”
Many students are creating their own brackets to see who can predict who takes it all. Most people only talk about the men’s bracket, completely disregarding that the women’s college playoffs are also taking place.
While many people don’t know much about the WNCAA, lots of people know specific players such as Paige Bueckers and Juju Watkins due to their extreme skill and talent. The Triton Voice interviewed a few students here at Triton to get their thoughts on the WNCAA tournament.
“I know kind of a lot about Paige Bueckers and how good she is just because my friend Peighton Hertigan never stops talking about her,” junior Sophia Stanley said. “I watched a few games with her and honestly watching women’s basketball is a lot more fun than people make it seem.”
Men’s basketball is so much more popular because men’s sports in general get a lot more attention and fame. That’s why Men’s March Madness brackets are so big and some disregard the women’s bracket.
“I don’t really care for the women’s March Madness tournament, but I did a bracket for the men’s and it was bad,” senior Lucas Tinkham said. “I watched a lot more of the men’s games.”
Currently in the March Madness tournament, the women are at the final four stage with the UConn Huskies playing against the UCLA Bruins in the Big East Conference while the South Carolina Gamecocks play the Texas Longhorns in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.
“I really want UConn to win it all,” junior Delaney Quinn said. “I personally don’t have a preference between mens or womens, I just think the games are fun to watch and everyone should watch both.”
Clearly there are a variety of different opinions on this subject here at Triton. Will things change as women’s basketball gets bigger? There’s no telling what could happen in the future, but for now, we wait and see who takes it all on Sunday, April 6th.
Edit: The March Madness tournament is now over and the Uconn Huskies won it all making it their 12th national championship win, most in the NCAA Women’s Basketball history.
