A new science class is available for students at Triton. A change to the engineering tech class allowed it to count as a science credit for one of the 3 science classes you need to graduate. Engineering tech is a great option for students who didn’t enjoy previous years of science class and want to try something new and hands-on.
The engineering tech teacher is Mr Guerin who has a reputation for being a chill teacher. Luke Borchers gave his opinion of Mr. Guerin, Luke has taken 3 of Mr. Guerin’s classes including engineering tech and he said “I have never been taught better than Guerin in both programming and engineering, he takes his time with students and helps out whenever he can while also showing you how to do things rather than do them for you” and “He is chill and doesn’t yell, he relates with his students and makes them feel comfortable asking questions and talking amongst each other”. I have also taken multiple of Mr. Guerin’s classes and absolutely agree with Luke.
For those who don’t know what engineering tech is about Mr Guerin has a rundown for you, “The first thing is learning how to use the 3d modeling software, the point is that anything you design you can print in a 3d printer. You also learn how to code virtual robots, and do hands-on projects making mouse trap powered cars and other cool stuff, and how to use common power tools”.
A typical class in engineering tech could vary, Mr. Guerin provided some examples: He said class depends on what part of the engineering design the class is working on, The first step of the engineering design is researching and coming up with a design, then you test the design, and based on the tests you keep improving the design and always keep improving, The class is a good mix of hands-on and computer work however Mr Guerin did mention that the coding part of the design is not to complicated as your only working with block code, if you take engineering tech 2 you do the coding yourself
Engineering tech could also be a great option for triton athletes who are required to be passing 4 core classes in order to compete, Now that engineering tech is a science it can count as one of those core classes. If you are an athlete you might find that you enjoy a more hands-on class.
Mr Guerin’s classes are often pretty simple and can be great options for people who are
taking multiple difficult classes and want to choose an easier elective to help reduce the after-school workload. His classes are also Homework/Test free, and the main work/grades are the projects
When asked if he would recommend the class to upcoming juniors who have to choose a third science class, Mr. Guerin said “Absolutely, I’d recommend the class to everyone”.
When asked about how he feels about engineering tech becoming another science option. Mr Guerin said “It’s great to give people more opportunities and more flexibility in their schedules. They are always adding more requirements and I feel that all of those additions have been limiting what people can do.”
