Tensions are high throughout Triton High School as the time nears the corner when we would’ve had midterms. The cancellation of midterms has brought about quite the difference of opinions in the student body and staff.
“I’m very excited that we only have to deal with the stress of serious exams at the end of the year now,” junior Delaney Quinn said. “But some teachers are replacing midterms with bigger assignments like quarterlies and I think that’s unfair.”
Throughout the years at Triton High School, midterms have been quite the on and off thing. During COVID they didn’t take place and a few years prior they didn’t happen either. So is now just another one of those time periods where we stop for a couple years then do them again? Lots of questions have been raised about this topic.
In a recent debate, the question of whether midterms should stay in place or not was brought up. After much discussion, a vote took place. The outcome of that vote resulted in midterms being canceled. Now while most students are quite happy about this, other students and teachers think otherwise.
“I think it’s a disservice to the students as we are not preparing them for their futures,” staff member Mrs. Galante said. “Whether it be college final exams or exams for the trades students should learn how to deal with their test taking anxiety and be ready for them.”
Mrs. Galante brings up a good point that it might not be preparing us. Others also would agree with this statement because students won’t be as ready for finals, especially the freshmen who have never done something like this before. Also, most students here at Triton will be taking the next step and going off to college, where there will always be big exams and not doing these things now in high school could really negatively impact the students and set us up for potential failure on our future exams.
Students are having mixed opinions about the cancellation, especially because of the fact that the half days are gone. Senior Luke Sullivan gave Triton Voice his opinion.
“I’m very happy that they’re canceled and I don’t have to participate in these tests that include an extensive amount of information that really makes me struggle with them,” Sullivan said. “However I am quite disappointed that we lose those half days because I love having 3 half days in a week, so that really pooped on my parade.”
Apparently the no half days is “pooping on people’s parades” which is quite the bummer. Another reason that has been mentioned is the confusion around the reasoning behind the cancellation.
“I’m not really sure they’re even gone, it has not been clear to me,” Galante said.
Now while the definite reason behind them being taken away isn’t very clear to everyone, it still brings up very high emotions from those around the school building. Just walking the halls you will hear the vast difference of opinions between the students and teachers.
This has been the topic of many conversations within the school as the first semester comes to an end. Since no one knows what will happen with midterms in the future, all we can do is wait and see what happens.
