The New England Patriots are looking forward to a new era following a challenging 2024 season that culminated in a 4-13 record and the departure of head coach Jerod Mayo. With franchise legend Mike Vrabel stepping in as the new head coach, the Patriots have many routes they could take since they now hold the 4th overall pick in the upcoming NFL draft, one which will shape the future of the franchise.
The 2024 season was marked by struggles on both sides of the ball for the Patriots. Offensively, the team averaged just 17 points per game, ranking 30th out of 32 teams, while the defense allowed 24.5 points per game, placing them 22nd in most points let up. These challenges led to a disappointing 4-13 finish, resulting in the Patriots firing head coach Jerod Mayo after just one season.
“This season was embarrassing, we need a lot of changes in the offseason to have a winning record next year,” said Micheal Coco, former Triton Football player.
The Patriots firs
t move in the offseason was to get a new coach after firing Mayo. After a few interviews for the position, the Patriots landed on Mike Vrabel, a three-time Super Bowl champion with New England and a member of the Patriots Hall of Fame. Most Patriots fans are extremely happy with this decision as he’s a Patriots legend, and as a coach he brings in a lot of experience and a winning mentality to his role. His previous success as head coach of the Tennessee Titans, including being named the 2021 NFL Coach of the Year, shows his capability of leading and rejuvenating the Patriots.
“I think he could really help the Patriots next season, especially with all of his experience and being a former Patriot,” Said Bradyn Lopes, former Triton Varsity Football Player.
Holding the 4th overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, the Patriots have a prime opportunity to address key areas they are missing. Given the team’s struggles in generating the pass rush — they ranked last in the league with only 28 sacks – picking a defensive playmaker should be a priority. Penn State edge rusher Abdul Carter has been a name frequently mentioned as a potential target that the Patriots should go after to help their defense.
Alternatively, many fans believe the Patriots need to enforce their offensive linemen to provide better protection for Drake Maye, giving Maye more time in the pocket. Investing in some top-tier offensive linemen could better help Maye’s development, which is essential to the Patriots.
“I want to see them (The Patriots) draft a O-linemen, like Will Campbell from LSU,” Said Anthony Navaroli, Triton Varsity Football starter.
The upcoming months are critical for the Patriots as they seek to rebound from their last season. With Mike Vrabel’s leadership and a high draft pick, the Patriots organization has tools to make significant improvements. The decisions made in the draft and throughout this offseason will be critical in determining whether the Patriots can return to their winning ways and reestablish themselves as contenders this year.
