There’s an annual occasion coming up we often know as a day that gives us an extra day off from school. But in all honesty, many students really don’t know what the importance of Veterans Day really is and how we can celebrate those who fought for our country.

The holiday marks the anniversary of the November 11th 1918 signing of the Armistice. Which was the agreement to end the fighting during World War 1, once called the“war to end all wars”.

Veterans Day is a more significant holiday not just for those who risked their lives but the community acknowledging that aspects could not be how it is today if it weren’t for them. On November 11th, we will be enjoying this day of remembrance. There are several events around the area that Veterans or supporters can attend.  Here are the following:

  1. There is a Veterans day parade being held in Boston. This parade is a rain or shine event. It starts at Boylston and Charles streets, marching up Boylston to Treemont. It marches straight until it enters City Hall Plaza where it ends.
  2. There will be a 2017 Veterans Walk and run that honors those who have served, and work towards solutions to prevent and end homelessness among veterans. This fundraiser event is sponsored by Back on My Feet in Boston, and helps support homeless Vets. Tickets will be $35 and starts at 6 pm on 11/11/17.
  3. If you’re a veteran or active duty military, often restaurants want to thank you. You will need proof of your status, such as military ID, photo of yourself in uniform, or other proof of service. You will most likely end up getting a free or discounted meal! You can look up online specific restaurants that will do this for Veteran individuals.
