Triton Sports Teams Help Community

Football and Soccer Teams Volunteer to Clean Cemetery

Ryan Farrell, Staff Writer

On Sunday, October 22 the Triton football and soccer teams traveled to the South Byfield Cemetery to help preserve the gravestones there.

Members of the school’s football and soccer teams spent several hours at the cemetery removing lichen from the gravestones and cleaning them with water donated by Nunan Florist and Greenhouses. This is the fourth year that the teams have done this for the community.

This event was organized by Preserving Newbury, a community service project founded by Triton Alumnus Donald Jarvis.

The two teams have been working with Preserving Newbury cleaning the gravestones for four years. Football coach Patrick Sheehan said that, “we’ve tried doing different things in the past, but kids really respond to this and feel good about it.”

Students who participated in the community service agreed that they felt good about what they were doing and wanted to continue in the future.

“It felt really good to give back to the community,” said senior soccer captain Owen Heffernan. This was Heffernan’s fourth year cleaning the cemetery with the soccer team.

Football captain and senior, Thomas Lapham, said that, “it’s good to do something good for the community with the team. It’s a good thing the program does.” Both students agreed that the teams should continue volunteering in the future to help the community.

Preserving Newbury  has multiple other community projects planned for the rest of the school year that they may need volunteers or donations for. Readers can donate or volunteer their to Wreaths Across America to have wreaths placed on the graves of veterans around Newbury. This is a good opportunity for students at Triton to help out their community and to complete any community service hours they may need to.
